About  Penguin Gourd

Also known as a "Calabash", these gourds are 5 inches in diameter, 12 inches long, and shaped like a penguin. Ideal for craft projects as a little black and white paint turns this gourd into a penguin easily. Gourd plants are extremely vigorous and require a long, warm growing season, ranging from 95 to 120 days to maturity. Harvest before a frost.

Sow seeds directly in full sun after the soil has warmed. Train the vine onto a trellis or fence to save space and to produce neater, more rounded shapes.

The origin of gourds has been a subject of debate for decades. Archaelogical findings seem to show that Asia first domesticated the gourd for use as a container, though Africa and several island nations such as Polynesia and New Zealand also have an early history of using gourds as fishing floats, bottles, or musical instruments.

Dry and use as decoration, birdhouses, etc. 10-15 days, 70-75ºF. Start early indoors in pots and transplant after last spring frost. Soak seeds in warm water overnight before seeding. Germination rates can be improved by clipping a shallow slice (with toenail clippers) off side of seed near the pointed end. Can also be seeded directly in the field in warm climates after soil temperature is 72ºF.
