Desert Willow

The desert willow is a little tree that adds color and fragrance to your backyard; provides summer shade; and attracts birds, hummingbirds and bees. The long, slender leaves make you think of willow, but once you learn some desert willow tree facts, you’ll see that it is not in the willow family at all.
Although its name indicates otherwise, this 10- to 15-foot shrub is not a true willow; rather, it belongs to the trumpet-creeper (Campsis radicans) family and it was named for its willow-like foliage. It blooms with large, trumpet-shaped flowers from the beginning of summer through the first frost and it is easily grown from seed.

Grow a Desert Willow

Desert Willow is drought-tolerant, and can be found growing naturally along our ephemeral streambeds or washes, where it offers natural protection against flood and erosion damage.
The seeds in the long, thin pods grow so readily that the tree is considered invasive in some areas. Planting desert willow trees from cuttings is also possible.
One of the most interesting desert willow tree facts is that the seeds establish themselves in newly deposited river sediments after seasonal flowing. The young trees trap and hold soil sediment as their roots grow, creating islands.
When you are trying to figure out how to grow a desert willow, remember that the tree is native to the desert. Choose a planting location with full sun exposure and well-drained soil. Desert willow prefers limestone soil, but also grows well in rocky, caliches, loam, sandy and granitic soil, with minimal need for you to add any organic matter to the soil. This low-water plant tolerates dry conditions and has a high drought tolerance. Allowing it to dry out between watering it helps encourage continual blooming.

MEDICINAL USES

The Desert Willow's flowers, leaves and bark have all been used in hot poultices and as a soothing tea for coughs. Other known uses were as treatments to guard against yeast infections, athlete's foot and as first aid for scrapes and scratches. Tea (from the flowers) produces a natural anti-oxidant, which promotes cardiovascular health and regulates glucose metabolism.

Greater Celandine ( Chelidonium majus )

It is one of the twenty-four herbs mentioned in Mercer's Herbal.

Botical Chelidonium majus
English Greater Celandine
Swallow Wort, Celandine,tetterwort,nipplewort

Characteristics of Chelidonium majus

Chelidonium majus is commonly known as greater celandine, wartweed and swallowwart, native to rocky slopes, woodlands, waste areas and along roads in Europe and western Asia, greater celandine is a short-lived perennial or biennial in the poppy family that bears yellow flowers and gray-green leaves.

Medicinal Uses of Chelidonium majus

Although all parts of this plant are toxic to humans, the plant has a long history of herbal/medicinal usage. It was once believed to be an effective remedy for wart removal, resulting in the acquisition of common names such as wartweed and swallowwart.

Alterative, diuretic, purgative. It is used in jaundice, eczema, scrofulous diseases, etc., the infusion of 1 OZ. of the dried herb to a pint of boiling water being taken in wineglassful doses. The infusion is a cordial and greatly promotes perspiration. The addition of a few aniseeds in making a decoction of the herb in wine has been held to increase its efficacy in removing obstructions of the liver and gall.

A fluid extract is also prepared, the dose being 1/2 to 1 drachm. Eight to 10 drops of the tincture made from the whole herb, or of the fresh juice, given as a dose three times a day in sweetened water, is considered excellent for overcoming torpid conditions of the liver. In the treatment of the worst forms of scurvy it has been given with benefit.

The orange-coloured, acrid juice is commonly used fresh to cure warts, ringworm and corns, but should not be allowed to come into contact with any other part of the skin.

In milk, it is employed as an eye-lotion, to remove the white, opaque spots on the cornea. Mixed with sulphur, it was formerly used to cure the itch.

An ointment made of the roots and lard boiled together, also of the leaves and flowers, has been used with advantage for piles.

Celandine is a very popular medicine in Russia, where it is said to have proved effective in cases of cancer.

It is still used in Suffolk as a fomentation for toothache.

Growing Chelidonium majus

Select a sunny, partially shady or shady area.
Amend the soil with perlite and a 2- to 3-inch layer of shredded pine bark mulch or leaf mold if it is heavy clay that does not drain quickly. This plant requires excellent drainage. Break up the soil with a shovel or rototiller until it has a fine texture with no clumps. Mix the amendments thoroughly into the soil.
Spread the Chelidonium majus seeds over the prepared soil in early spring immediately after the last expected hard frost. Cover the seeds with garden soil to a depth equal to three times the width of the seeds.
Keep the soil evenly moist until the seeds germinate and the seedlings grow to a few inches tall. Thin the seedlings to 1 foot apart. Continue to water the plants once or twice a week in the absence of rain. Do not allow the soil to dry completely between waterings.
Deadhead the flowers as they fade to prevent self-seedling. Leave the flowers on the plant if self-seeding is desired. Pick the 2-inch long seed pods off the plant as they ripen and dry to collect the seeds for later planting. Split the dry pods open and empty the seeds into a paper bag. Place the paper bag in the freezer for two days. Store the seeds in a cool, dark area or in the refrigerator until ready to plant.

Artemisia vulgaris - European mugwort

Artemisia_annua.jpeg

Artemisia vulgaris ( mugwort or common wormwood ) is one of several species in the genus Artemisia . This species is also occasionally known as Felon Herb , Chrysanthemum Weed , Wild Wormwood , Old uncle Henry , Sailor's Tobacco , Naughty Man , Old Man or St. John's Plant.

Synonyms : Absinthium spicatum. Artemisia affinis. Artemisia coarctata. Artemisia officinalis

Characteristics

Artemisia vulgaris is a PERENNIAL growing to 1.2 m (4ft) by 0.7 m (2ft 4in) at a fast rate.

Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and prefers well-drained soil. Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils and can grow in very alkaline soils.
It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers dry or moist soil and can tolerate drought.

Uses

Mugwort was considered the 'universal herb for protection and prophecy' throughout the ancient world. Artemisia vulgaris was used for pain and healing, psychic powers and lucid dreaming. In ancient China and Japan, Mugwort was hung in open doorways to exorcise the spirits of disease. The ancient Europeans did the same to ward off evil spirits. These two separated cultures also believed that the supernatural powers of Mugwort were revealed by mermaids who came from the sea to present the herb for the good of humankind.

Mugwort was once the staple ingredient in beer before Hops was introduced. It was also known as Sailor's Tobacco, as it was used as an alternative when sailors ran out of tobacco at sea.

Mugwort tea was usually drunk before divination rituals and also burnt as a ‘transporting’ incense. Also known as the visionary herb, Mugwort is still used today for increasing psychic powers.

Native Americans also burned Mugwort as a ‘smudge’ to purify the spiritual and physical environment. The herbal tea was, and is still used by women for late periods

Beach Wormwood

Beach Wormwood (Artemisia caudata) is a herbaceous biennial wildflower growing in excessively dry or sandy soils and open areas.Other common names include Wild Wormwood, Western Sagebrush, Threadleaf Sagewort, Field Sagewort, and Sagewort Wormwood.

Beach Wormwood blossoms with small yellow or pale green flowers from August to September.
This wildflower loves the sun.

Native American tribes have for many years found a host of medicinal uses for this sagewort. A tea was brewed from the roots and used by the Lakota to relieve constipation. The Blackfeet tribes were known to chew the leaves for stomach pain and increased stamina. They even administered a mash to pained eyes, arthritic joints, and skin suffering from eczema. The Shuswap still use this sagewort today in a variety of treatments, including coughs, common colds, and tuberculosis. Also, a salve is made from branches and used on contusions, swellings and other blemishes.

Growing Information:

Sow seeds on top of moist, sandy soil. They can be sown in flats and transplanted or directly sown.
If sowing in containers, keep them out of direct sunlight until the plants are established. A good germination temperature is about 65-70 degrees Fahrenheit. Water seeds with a mister or from below so that they do not become too saturated. Established plants can be placed in sun or partial shade in a sandy, relatively dry soil. The tops can be harvested in late spring and again in late fall after flowering. Plants also can be reproduced by division.

Artemisia dracunculus

Artemisia dracunculus, commonly called wild tarragon, is native to temperate Europe and Asia. Also found in western North America, though many of these populations may have resulted from introduction and naturalization. It produces viable seed and will often self-seed. Its leaves produce variable flavor and aroma, sometimes lacking both flavor and aroma. It has a long history of medicinal uses, but the species is not often used for culinary purposes.

It is a rhizomatous perennial or sub-shrub that typically grows to 24” tall on generally erect stems clad with narrow, linear to lance-shaped, light to medium green leaves (to 3-4” long). Greenish white flowers in narrow elongated panicles bloom in summer.

By contrast, Artemisia dracunculus var. sativa, commonly called French tarragon, is commonly used as a culinary herb. It is the primary flavoring in Sauce Bearnaise.

Tarragon 'French'

Its leaves have a consistently pungent, anise-like flavor and aroma, and are often grown in herb gardens. French tarragon rarely produces seeds and those produced are usually sterile (plants must be propagated by stem cuttings or division).

Characteristics

Common Name: tarragon
Type: Herbaceous perennial
Family: Asteraceae
Native Range: Temperate northern hemisphere
Zone: 3 to 7
Height: 1.50 to 3.00 feet
Spread: 1.00 to 1.50 feet
Bloom Time: July to August
Bloom Description: Yellowish-white
Sun: Full sun
Water: Dry to medium
Maintenance: Medium
Suggested Use: Annual, Naturalize
Leaf: Fragrant
Tolerate: Rabbit, Deer, Dry Soil

Culture

Best grown in organically rich, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. Prefers a neutral soil. Avoid wet soils. Appreciates a sheltered location and a year-round mulch in the St. Louis area. Cut plants to the ground in early spring. Dividing the clumps every 3-4 years will help keep plants robust. Plants will slowly spread by creeping rhizomes.

Uses

Wild tarragon is an aromatic herb that is primarily grown in herb gardens. It also may be effectively grown in containers or window boxes. It is generally not considered suitable for borders or other ornamental plantings.
